Looking at History under a microscope

What is Microhistory

Microhistory is a practice aimed to return to a narrative where the historians are generally concerned with overlooked persons and marginalized voices. Where the historian tries to grasp how large scale global processes and events by looking at the everyday life during the time period studied (Paul, 64). This still allows the microhistory to have a higher appeal to the general public (Popkin, 146).

Most scholars would say that Microhistory began in Italy with the publishing of Carlo Ginzburg The Cheese and the Worms in 1976 (Magnusson, Gylfi, and Szijártó, 1). However, Carlo Ginzburg often stated that the first person to use the term microhistory was George R. Stewart in 1959 and then a few years later by Luiz Gonzalez (Ginzburg, 10-12). But the meaning of current microhistory today is different than how it was used by Luiz Gonzalez where it was microhistory was a synonym for local history. This is different than how today’s practitioners view microhistory. As a general thought microhistory does not look at the daily life of people but rather the micro-scale analysis to test larger-scale explanation paradigms. Microhistory is mainly being used to combat Marxism leaning historians as well as the Braudelian longue durée (Trivellato, section II, para. 1).

Microhistory is a broad subject for conversation being that there are multiple different views on microhistory from the Italian, French, and Anglo-Saxon views on what is microhistory. Even so, Microhistory can be described as being a detective and putting together clues about something that does not seem right and investigate the event to try to explain why that weird event happened.

Micro vs Macro

The importance of understanding the differences between micro-macro context is one of the main reasons for microhistory coming out where at the time there some historians were just looking at the macro history and not the fine details of local history. The micro-macro link is one of the cores of microhistory. This was stated as part of the general paradigm of microhistory.

The change in thinking to think of history on a micro-level comes from the changing from temporal to spatial thinking in methodological issues (Peltonen, 108-109). The issue with micro is to figure out what is micro is which can only be answered by what questions are being asked because microhistory is not just looking at a single village or individual which are just local history and biographies. An example was Le Roy Ladurie’s Montaillou which is an analysis of peculiar data created by the inquisition in the region during the fourteenth century (Peltonen, 114). On the other hand, an example of what a macro history is would be looking at large-scale migrations, war, technological breakthroughs (Trivellato, section I, para. 2). With the general idea of what is micro in microhistory, it comes to another potential flaw in microhistory which is the difference between biography and microhistory.

Multiple Practices of Microhistory

The Italian thought of microhistory or microstoria is that it is a tool to discard deterministic history which is the viewpoint of one Italian microhistorian Levi, who was the one who devised the line of thinking. Another characteristic of Italian microhistory is instead of focusing on the great structures, or the Longue durée, is “to elucidate historical causation at the level of small groups where most of life takes place and to open history up to peoples who would be left out by other methods” (Magnusson, Gylfi, and Szijártó, 17). This can be looked at either culturally or social line of thinking. Even with the thought of history looking like it was a sort of school Italian scholars would have rejected the thought (Trivellato, 125). In Italy, the divide between the cultural and socio-economic did not coexist peacefully and it took two different publications from Cerutti and Ginzburg that argued against the idea that Italian microstoria could be split because from the actors involved, they most often shared intentions between cultural and socio-economic reasoning (Trivellato, 125).

French microhistory took what the Italian microhistory is that is similar to the Italian thought but was more about theoretical reflection and changing the scale that actors appear in a different context, depending on the scale, at the same time (Szijártó 31). The receptivity of the Italian style of microhistory was because of the convergence of structural and contingent factors. Another factor is that one of the themes of looking at the socio-economics was a theme that the French historians were interested in (Trivellato 126). German thought was very similar to the French but tries to reconstruct the social interactions of the individuals or what Levi thought on microstoria (Magnusson, Gylfi, and Szijártó, 34).

The Anglo-Saxon view of microhistory is that they do not tend to actually try to arrive at any macro-level conclusions but try to interpret the actors’ experiences that they had. Making the Anglo-Saxon closer to Historical anthropology than others. They also have a tendency to define microhistory very loosely. In America, the style of microhistory began to look like a divergence from the styles of the French and Italian microhistory. There were some factors for this being agency and narrative history. In which agency are an individual will to resist and change the world around them and narrative history being the fact that it can reach a larger audience and recover the subjectivity of the subject (Trivellato, 127).

Another difference that American microhistory has is that during this time interest in cultural history was on the rise. At this time Edward Muir and Guildo Ruggio were putting together essays that were originally published in the Quaderni Strotici that focused on cultural and gender history. And the English translation omitted some of the foundational microhistory essays that had to deal with social and economic topics. The collection with its omissions brought the argument between the differences between the socio-economic and the cultural side of microhistory back into conversation (Trivellato, 129).

Biography and Microhistory

Another point that has to be taken into account is that microhistory can be about a singular person and their life which sounds like it is nothing more than a biography of that person. This similarity can raise the question of whether biography is a version of microhistory. When you remember one of the ideas of microhistory which is to focus on obscure people and their lives to understand the experience and mentalities of ordinary people it does look like there is no difference between the two which is a falsehood. Robert Skidelsky stated, “Biography had its roots in Romantic view of the artist as Hero and in the Great Man theory of history” and even in modern times biography has not changed its roots even with a change in writing styles (Lepore, 131).

Another point of difference is that microhistory does not tell the whole life story of the person but focuses just on the key events in their life. Unlike how the biography tends to chronicle the whole life, microhistory tries to answer a historical or historiographical question (Lepore, 132-133). With the different questions and the fact that most subjects are not living, a microhistorian does not have to worry about some of the issues that biographers have to deal with for example getting too close to their subject the microhistorian can stay at an arm’s length.

How The Cheese and the Worm Came to Be

The Cheese and the Worm is one of the founding books of microhistory because it was one of the first to come out, of the popularity the book had when it came out and the criticism that comes with its popularity. Back in the 1960s, Carlo Ginzburg began to look at Inquisitorial traits and realized that the nonethnocentric approach would need an anthropologist (Ginzburg, Tedeschi, and Tedeschi, 21-22). Carlo Ginzburg did not restrict his writing by only reconstructing the past, but he narrated the events. As he thought about the relationship between research and narrative strategies, he decided to reconstruct the intellectual, moral, and fantastic world of the miller Menocchio based on sources from the people who condemned him to death (Ginzburg, Tedeschi, and Tedeschi, 23). The first hurdle that Carlo Ginzburg had to face was constituent elements of the documentation and the hesitations and silences of Menocchio in the face of persecution. This led Ginzburg to place the doubts and uncertainties as part of the narration as the search for truth also became part of the narration even if the truth was incomplete (Ginzburg,Tedeschi, and Tedeschi, 23-24).

Taking a small look at how Carlo Ginzburg thought helps show both what microhistory is and also helps formulate some of the ideas that go into writing microhistory. That he had a question on the traits that the inquisitors would have which you can argue is the macro level and from there he narrowed down to a single person persecuted and killed to answer how the miller’s life could be an example of the people who have been persecuted but also the local population thought process and what they believed.

Criticism of Microhistory

One of the many criticisms of microhistory is that mictohistorians have failed to escape modernization and that the French and Italian microhistorians want to write a total history but from the ground up which has brought criticism that it is more exclusionary (Magnusson, Gylfi, and Szijártó, 122). Another issue with microhistory will have to be that because of the narrative style the historian can tend to drift their writing to attract attention and appeal to the general public. This can also lead to historians going too far into the lived experience of the research which can draw the historian to psychologizing. (Szijártó, 211-212).

Microhistorians try to keep an arm’s length from the people they are writing about. The historian also can believe that they know how the person would think after years and struggles with new information that can come to light and become too attached to the person that they were studying. One such example comes from the historian Magnusson after he released his first book and had received letters from a farmer that went against what he had researched. “The farmer’s account of how Niels had castrated himself affected me so deeply that I could never bring myself to answer his letter and thank him” (Magnusson, Gylfi, and Szijártó, 120).

One of the goals of microhistory being generalities of the past allows the question of the validity of the microhistory argument as a valid argument based on a single case (Magnusson, Gylfi, and Szijártó, 129). This also brings up the question of the scale of representations which is that if you look closer you can lose all representation of the subject that you are researching. Another criticism of microhistory is that they try to in the words of Matti Peltonen, “are actually trying to discover very big things with their microscopes”. Meaning that some historians believe that the microhistory claims are overinflated and exaggerated (Brown 14).

Benefits For the Use of Microhistory

With microhistory being told in a narrative style it can be considered a benefit allowing a larger audience to be able to read and be more interesting to read than the traditional style of social history. Microhistory is also connected through the use of pieces of facts from sources and that microhistory is built more directly on the pieces of facts than that of larger social histories. This gives the reader a feeling that the words that they are reading are coming from the people of the time. This feeling is because a microhistorian can gain more intimate knowledge of the person that they are researching but also of the past society as well.

Another strength of microhistory is that it can potentially show the context of a person’s world without falling into adding the historian’s own agenda or personal paradigms because of the limited frame of reality and investigation (Szijártó, 210-211). Overall, the reduction of scale for microhistory is can also be seen as a benefit because it limits the amount of repetitive information and allows the isolation and testing of social thought (Bandia, 85).

Microhistory and The future

With the amount of criticism and the difficulty that microhistory has with connecting with the larger context of history, one can seem to believe that microhistory is falling out of favor. But some believe that there is still a place for microhistory in the time of Global history. One of the ways that microhistory can still have relevancy for the future is that microhistory can be applied to any source of a subject as well as be combined into a micro-macro scale, meaning that you take the ideas from the microscale and connect them with the bigger picture of society. This can be the transformation of microhistory into a narrative history with global themes through a biographical lens. (Trivellato, section VI, para. 1). Another way that microhistory can be used today is with how microhistory has a synchronic approach that can be a counterweight to the fast pace of macro-historical accounts and is able to add details and analysis of comparison to the topic (Trivellato, para. 3).

There has been a change to a new type of microhistory from Poni and Ginzburg to follow personal names across multiple records. This transformation is able to occur because of new technologies and the digitization of archives and libraries. The reason for microhistory being a paradigm that can potentially stand in the postmodern era is that at the basic point microhistory is asking questions about how social and cultural systems emerge and evolve (Trivellato, section IX, para. 1). With these points, there can be a future for microhistory even as the landscape of historiography changes with time.

Microhistory has brought into light many new ideas of how history can be written. From looking at the massive overview macro structures that have been used in the past, microhistory can give a new way that the social life of people lived. This is because microhistory asks questions, that looking at history from a larger scale can overlook and not give attention to, which the answers that microhistory uncovers can be a whole new way of understanding how people in the past lived and the social connection of everyday people and their lives.
